Seabird - ‘Til We See the Shore
Producer: Allen Salmon, Jacquire King, and Needtobreathe Seabird hasn’t been together all that long. This Cincinnati, Ohio based band formed just five years ago to enter a competition and have been playing together ever since. Like most bands signed to Credential Records (a division of EMI Christian Music Group), Seabird is a band of faith-filled Christians who use music as a profession - not necessarily a ministry all the time. Like bands before them on the label, a la Eddison Glass, Dizmas or Lost Ocean, Seabird manages to walk the line between singing about their faith and relationships very well. There isn’t much that is overtly Christian on ‘Til We See the Shore - except for the band’s debut radio single - the catchy “Rescue” as well as title cut “‘Til We See the Ocean Shore”. The rest of the songs offer different areas of encouragement - such as commitment (“Let Me Go On”), family issues (“Apparitions”), bad relationships (“Cotton Mouth [Jargon]”), love (“Falling For You”, “Stronger”), and much more. Musically, one can’t help but feel like we’ve heard it all before - but rarely have we heard it quite as good as Seabird performs it. The band’s sound feels like a bit of a combination between the more piano oriented music of Needtobreathe (with a more pleasant vocal style) crossed with the memorable melodies of The Fray and even Euro-pop of Coldplay. It’s nothing entirely original - but one can’t at least be captivated by how good the band actually is. The opening piano melody on “Black and Blue” set a nice tone for this playful record - and things are equally as engaging on “Stronger” (with the banjo intro) and slow-brood beginning of “Cottonmouth (Jargon)” that ends in a clever way. Also - the memorable rock of “Maggie Mahoney” adds a unique flair to the disc as well. While Seabird may not be the most original new band out there - ‘Til We See the Shore is a fantastic debut record that shows hints of true brilliance from Seabird. Musically they may be able to find some room for improvement, but lyrically the band is as strong as any veteran on the road today. It will be interesting to see where Seabird goes.
