Superchick - Rock What You Got!
Producer: Max Hsu
Can you believe it’s been three years since we’ve last seen an album of original music from the band Superchick? It’s hard to believe - especially since the band always seems to show up in places you’d least expect - such as TV shows, movie soundtracks, video games, and most recently on the radio with the popular “Stand In the Rain.” The band promised to release their much anticipated mainstream debut on Columbia Records - but that seems to have fizzled. What fans got instead is a brand new release, once again produced by group owner/manager Max Hsu on Inpop Records. After three years to follow up the highly acclaimed Beauty From Pain, one would expect to have an album full of music and memorable moments from the popular band. Unfortunately, Hsu and gang released quite the opposite. Don’t be fooled by the album’s 12 tracks - as one is a song intro, another a remix of the hit single “Stand In the Rain”, and the sily “Dave Ghazarian Guitar Hero” extra. That leaves us with a measly nine new tracks. That’s hardly worth the wait. There’s also not much here that we haven’t already heard from the band - such as the typical catchy album opener ("Rock What You Got"), girl empowerment ("So Beautiful"), and more. There are some really nice moments - and Superchick does pack a punch when needed - such as the Marilyn Manson musically-influenced “Hey Hey”. Also - the breathy ambience of “Breathe” and the brit-rock feel of “Crawl (Carry Me Through)” also add some nice moments as well - but they aren’t enough to really make Rock What You Got a strong release. Otherwise, it’s all more of the same. We’re heard this all from Superchick before - and more recently better from acts like Paramore or Flyleaf. At this stage, Superchick should be producing more creative work rather than resting on their laurels. Don’t get this review wrong - Superchick knows what to do to make their fans happy - and in that aspect - Rock What You Got succeeds on every level. One can’t but feel a tad disappointed in this release after waiting so long for new music from the band, however.
