Joel Auge’ - On the Blue
Producer: Stephen Leiweke
The next big artist set to change the way we view worship music is new Integrity Music signee Joel Auge. Though he may be new to Christian music circles, Auge has made a name for himself in Canada where he has served as worship leader for The Meeting House family of churches in Ontario, as well as spending time in Canadian bands Capstone, Six Days, and Hewitt. That time spent in those bands has helped Auge become not too routine in his worship writing - especially since those bands weren’t focused on making music for the church. This both helps and hurts Auge on his debut CD On the Blue. Musically, he’s brit-rock to the core - resembling acts like Jason Morant, Phil Wickham or Snow Patrol, thought not creating quite as catchy melodies as those artists at this point. That kind of sound works great for pop radio - especially on cuts like the infectious first single “So Deep In Love”, as well as other cuts like “Where You Go I Go” or “On the Blue”. That area is definitely where Auge shines the most - introspective moments of worship. However, this disc really fails to set any kind of corporate worship mood. There’s just not much here that will work in a corporate setting, which is a bit surprising coming from an Integrity label artist. There are a few moments that show a worship leader recorded this album - such as “Every Heart”, “Singing Hallelujah”, and maybe “Glory Glory”. Other than that, this album really fits more into the mode of a moody singer/songwriter - especially notable on the album’s closing track “I Know My Place.” Auge is great at presenting that kind of worship setting - but as a corporate worship record - it doesn’t showcase Auge well. It will be interesting to see where Auge goes from here.
