When Big Daddy Weave burst onto the scene in 2002, the industry was abuzz with what looked to be the industry’s answer to Dave Matthews Band.  And for sure, the band was the best answer the Christian music industry had to the popular jam band.  They did what they did well and soon released a follow-up that followed in the footsteps of the band’s impressive debut.  In 2005, the band released What I Was Made For - and it found the band heading down a more radio-friendly route - mimicking other popular bands like MercyMe, Casting Crowns, or Steven Curtis Chapman.  What followed in 2006 was more of the same, and Big Daddy Weave was quickly gaining a reputation as a slick radio band as opposed to a more thought-provoking band known for its art.  The band is set to change all of that with the release of What Life Would Be Like - where the band is said to have gone back to the roots a bit more.  Unfortunately, the band doesn’t quite succeed in accomplishing that task.  Sure, there are moments of greatness here that recalls the band’s earlier works - such as “Just Like Somebody Else”, the driving “You Found Me”, and Phil Collins-cover “Another Day In Paradise” (which is by far the band’s best track on this release).  Otherwise, there’s not much on What Life Would Be Like that sets it apart from the band’s previous releases.  This is especially seen on the group’s first single - “What Life Would Be Like” - which bears a striking resemblance to last year’s hit single “Every Time I Breathe.” That’s not to say that the band isn’t good at creating catchy, pop radio-friendly songs.  In fact, it’s all performed quite well and produced to perfection - but just nothing is there to set the band apart from like-minded Christian musicians.  Overall, What Life Would Be Like will certainly sit well with the band’s fans, but early listeners will probably continue to be frustrated by the band’s lack of growth.
