Third Day - Revelation

Let’s recap Third Day’s illustrious career, shall we?  The band has already racked up six Gold records and one Platinum selling title - selling over seven million records in their career.  The group has been awarded three Grammy Awards, 23 GMA Dove Awards, three American Music Award nominations, and had 25 #1 radio singles.  The group has been featured on the cover of Billboard Magazine and just performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in addition to CNN, 60 Minutes, VH-1, NBC’s Today Show, and more.  That’s not bad for a band that has worked almost exclusively in the Christian market since they debut back in 1996.  Many of the band’s original fans have been distraught by the band’s progressively AC leaning sound since 2002’s Come Together.  Those fans have since moved on, and even Third Day has admitted that their sound has gotten lighter as the years go on.  When the band announced a more pronounced rock sound this time around, most fans were skeptical - as this kind of thing has been said before (see 2004’s Wire).  However, the band showed promise with signing on heavyweight producer Howard Benson (Daughtry, Flyleaf, P.O.D.) and announcing guest spots from Chris Daughtry, Robert Randolph, and Flyleaf’s Lacey Mosely.  Well rock fans - have no fear - because the Third Day that you’ve loved all these years is back.  Revelation is not just a return to form for the guys, but it’s easily the best recording the guys from Atlanta have released since 1999’s Time.  The album kicks off with the rocking “This Is Who I Am” before kicking into the energetic “Slow Down” (featuring Chris Daughtry on background vocals).  A true album stand out includes the Robert Randolph guest spot on “Otherside”, as well as the stirring 6/8 feel of “Run to You.” It’s great hearing the guys in this form again.  Even the group’s ballads are more electric this time around - especially “Call My Name” - despite it’s similarity to Wherever You Are‘s breakout smash “Cry Out to Jesus”.  “Revelation” is also a nice mid-tempo addition to the album that should see plenty of light on AC radio even with its more amped up sound.  Lyrically, the band again focuses on topics that are current to today’s Christian walk - and they do well at avoiding typical clilches.  Overall, Revelation is a very welcome return to form for the guys - even if they rely a little too much of AC ballads still.  Revelation should do extremely well for the band by pumping up their sound while not alienating their current fan base.  It looks to be another fantastic couple of years for Third Day.
