Nicole C. Mullen - A Dream to Believe In, Vol. 2
Producer: David Mullen, Nicole C. Mullen, James “Big Jim” Wright, Otto Price, Jamie Moore
Nicole C. Mullen’s story is one that is known by most ardent listeners of Christian music. Mullen started her career in the early 1990’s, but she didn’t really start to turn the heads of industry insiders until she won Song of the Year at the Dove Awards for “On My Knees” in 1997. She was soon signed to Word Records herself - breaking out in a very big way with the anthem “Redeemer”. Her success continued over the next few years due to stand out radio hits like “Call On Jesus”, “Come Unto Me”, and “I Am”. She released Sharecroppers Seed, Vol. 1 last year - which was to be the first of a three part collection of songs that all had a single purpose. That collection focused on Mullen’s heritage and family connection with a more stripped down, acoustic feel. Now, 15 months later, she is releasing A Dream to Believe In, Vol. 2, the second installment in Mullen’s trilogy. Where Sharecroppers Seed was a welcome change of pace for the singer/songwriter, A Dream to Believe In is a return of form for Mullen. This album finds Mullen all over the map once again, touching on styles like AC-pop ("Forever You Reign” and “Feel Like I’m In Love"), urban drive ("Brainwash"), rock ("Look Like Me"), acoustic r&b ("Still a Dream” or “Start Over") and dance/club music ("Work With Me (Dance)"). Mullen definitely feels at home in all of these styles - it would just be nice to see her remain focused on particular style - which is what made Sharecroppers Seed such a stand out recording. Much like that recording though, A Dream to Believe In really lacks a stand out track that will likely resonate with people the way past cuts like “Redeemer” and “Call On Jesus” have. Lyrically, A Dream to Believe In focuses on reconciliation between families, spouses, races, etc. This is predominately seen on “Still a Dream” or “Start Over”. Overall, A Dream to Believe In, Vol. 2 will likely be well accepted among Mullen’s fans - as this is all material that she’s tackled before. Hopefully the third installment of this series will see Mullen branching out a bit more.

I was really hoping Ms. Mullens would have stayed in the vein of “Brainwash” i think it could have been a killer album with that hard edge to it. But she decided to hit those AC/INSPO gems and I don’t really care for them.
Forever You Reign- sounds really cheezy/kid-pop (musically and with the drum patterns)
However, I did like the Bonus Cut “Work with Me"- how she went through all the different nationalities musical styles- very cool
