The Katinas - Still
Producer: Bryan Lennox
Most people probably remember the first time they heard The Katinas. It was on 1998’s Rocketown Records release Exodus. The brothers from Samoa gave a heartfelt and extremely memorable rendition of “Draw Me Close”. They went on to sign with Gotee Records and produced a few hit records like The Katinas and Destiny - much due to their strong harmonies and knack for writing catchy, hook-laden r&b and pop. After leaving the popular label, The Katinas released on record on BHT Entertainment, which was an album of Christian pop classics. Now, the group is on their own and releasing Still - an album that sounds like it came out of the 1990’s Christian music playbook. Musically, it just feels like the group is content on making sub-par Christian AC - much like what we’d hear from NewSong, 4HIM, or Avalon - only not quite as good. The album kicks off with the tight harmonies of “Because” before kicking into the most aggressive track on the album - “Alive”. Things only go downhill from there - as the guys sing more of the schmaltzy, AC-driven stuff made popular in the 1990’s - especially on cuts like “Still”, “Feel”, “My Friend”, and “Fade”. It’s not that the group is bad at producing this kind of music, it’s just that it’s all been done before - an groups like Phillips, Craig & Dean and Point of Grace are continuing to excel at the genre - making this record sound dated and out of touch with what is happening with others in this arena. While it’s always nice to see a vocal ensemble who can also play their own instruments - even that isn’t enough to set The Katinas apart anymore. Unfortunately, it feels like The Katinas and producer Bryan Lennox have just lost touch of the pulse of Christian music.
