Jars of Clay - Closer EP
Producer: Ron Aniello, Gabe Ruschival, Jeremy Lutito, & Jars of Clay
Most fans of Jars of Clay always wondered why it took the band this long to go indie. The group has mentioned many times of how they never really saw eye to eye with their label - then Essential Records - despite continually releasing some of the most satisfying music the group has put out. The band ended their contract with the popular label with the release of 2006’s Good Monsters. Their first foray into indiehood was the release of their much-anticipated Christmas Songs recording. Now, in order to appease their fans, Jars of Clay is releasing the five-song EP, Closer. This five-song collection is an introduction to the newly indie band - with two new songs to be featured on the band’s upcoming 2009 release - “Closer” and “Safe to Land”. These two songs in particular show a band that cares less about catchy melodies and more about moody ambience and striking musicianship. It’s a style that fits the band well - and one that most of us saw coming from a mile away. Also included on the EP is “Prisoner of Hope” - a song that was recored specifically for the documentary Sons of Lwala. This song sounds as if it was plucked from the Good Monsters sessions with it’s driving and anthemic sound. The last two songs are re-workings of two of Jars’ most appreciated tracks - “Love Song For a Savior” and “Flood (New Rain)”. Fans who have heard the band in concert over the last couple of years know that the band has been toying with these songs for a while - so while they are nice enough renditions - they neither add nor take away from Jars of Clay’s already strong repertoire. Overall, the Closer EP is a nice holdover until serious fans of the band get a full-length feature release. Hopefully that comes sooner rather than later.
