Amy Courts - These Cold and Rusted Lungs
Producer: Neilson Hubbard
Amy Courts isn’t likely a name that you’ve heard of if you don’t follow the Christian music indie scene. She’s an up and coming singer/songwriter and is already making waves with her latest recording - These Cold & Rusted Lungs. Much like the album title suggests, Amy Courts’ latest recording isn’t for the light of heart. It’s all about life from a Christian perspective - but one that’s worn out and has trouble just finding time to breath. Courts’ songwriting reflects her songs in a more poetic nature - not unlike the songwriting of Christian music’s prized songwriters like Sara Groves or Cindy Morgan. From the opening strains of “Hold You Up” - the listener is greeted with thoughts of frustration over a broken relationship, while other cuts like “Drowning” reflect a Christian who is dealing with a spiritually dry time in his or her life. There’s not much that is of a real happy-go-lucky nature here, but Courts speaks in an honesty that is rarely heard these days. The Christian walk isn’t all sunshine and roses, and Courts does a great job of portraying that in song. And yet through it all, Amy shows the hope is ever present - especially on cuts like “In You” or the worship moments of “O Holy God.” Musically, Courts resembles a young Leigh Nash with shades of Emmylou Harris or Allison Krauss as well. This is alt-folk with shades of country and pop that are extremely pleasant to the ear. The main objection to the recording is a real lack of more encouraging moments. Even though encouragement is found in shades and shadows on the disc, These Cold & Rusty Lungs could definitely benefit from some even lighter fair. It’s just a minor complaint for a really nice album. These Cold & Rusty Lungs should surely give Courts the attention she deserves.
