33Miles - One Life
Producer: Nathan Nockels, Sam Mizell, Brown Bannister Christian music had a hole that needed to be filled for a long time. That hole is Country music. Back in the early 90’s - the industry saw in influx of Christian country acts (Gary Chapman, Lisa Daggs, Bruce Carroll, Brian Barrett) - but that soon fizzled out due to the growing rock scene. Since then, mainstream Country music has seen an huge surge - and as of early 2007 - other than the Crabb Family - there wasn’t much out there that Christian music fans could embrace in that field. Within a few months of each other - the industry was greeted with not one, but two artists who had a definite pop/country sound - 33Miles and Austins Bridge. Both bands saw a great amount of success - including nominations for New Artist of the Year in this year’s Dove Awards. 33Miles was decidedly more pop than Austins Bridge - and because of that - they saw a bit more success. 33Miles is returning with their sophomore effort for INO Records - One Life. One Life finds the band picking up where they left off - with that familiar East to West-meets-Rascal Flatts sound. Lead singer Jason Barton has admitted to feeling more comfortable in the pop musical landscape - but gosh-darn-it if he doesn’t sound fantastic over a produced country sound - most notable on the first half of the disc on songs like “Something Different”, “One Life to Love”, and album opener “Gone”. The country sound is helped in part to producers Nathan Nockels (Watermark, Phillips, Craig & Dean) and Brown Bannister (current Point of Grace, Steven Curtis Chapman). However, 33Miles hits the pop target exceptionally well - probably due to the help of Sam Mizell (Matthew West) on several cuts. 33Miles has really got the corner on the market of pop/country in Christian music - and as long as they continue to make smart pop with the amazing harmonies they have - they should stay around for a long time.
