Downhere - Ending Is Beginning
Producer: Mark Heimmerman & Stephen Gause Canadian rockers Downhere have always been the band that critics love to love and fans have really yet to latch onto. The group debuted on Word Records with their self-titled debut in 2001. They released a follow-up in 2003, So Much For Substitutes before re-emerging on the new indie label Centricity Records with 2006’s Wide-Eyed & Mystified. That album helped solidify Downhere has one of Christian music’s hardest working rock bands - and not only that - but one of the industry’s most talented as well. The group is returning with Ending Is Beginning - yet another album that helps Downhere maintain their status as one of Christian music’s gems. The boys from Canada seek help from producers Mark Heimmerman (dc Talk, Nichole Nordeman) and Stephen Gause (Derek Webb) to create another fascinating album. Lyrically, the band tackles the concept of death leading to new life - whether that be a physical or spiritual death. Nowhere is this seen greater than in the contemplative “The Problem”, “My Last Amen”, or album opener “Bleed For This Love”. Musically, like past efforts, Downhere is simply spectacular. The band never really sticks to their guns - as they recall everything from Maroon 5 and Queen to Top 40 act Coldplay and even some Christian radio favorites like MercyMe or Casting Crowns (doing so without sounding cliched in the process). Album highlights included the funk-inspired “My Last Amen”, catchy pop/rock of “Bleed For This Love”, alt-folky “The Problem”, and power-pop sounding “Love Is Rising”. Very few bands could handle two lead singers who are as much opposites as Marc Martel and Jason Germain. However, Downhere has it down to an art with their separated harmonies and intricate vocal deliveries. With Ending Is Beginning - Downhere has proven once again that they create some of the most beautiful and thought-provoking music this side of heaven. Hopefully, the masses will catch on soon.
