If you’ve been reading this site for any amount of time, it is readily apparent that we are fans of Andrew Peterson.  His an unique brand of artist - the kind that only comes along every once in a while.  He’s been compared by many as this generation’s Rich Mullins.  You can’t deny that comparison if you’ve heard anything by Peterson.  Ever since he debuted on the scene several years ago with Carried Along - he’s had nothing but major buzz surround each subsequent release.  However, Peterson has never gained the national exposure or fan base that similar artists like Bebo Norman or Caedmon’s Call have received.  Peterson has now moved over to Centricity Records for the release of his latest work - Resurrection Letters, Vol. 2.  Like many of Peterson’s past releases - Resurrection Letters, Vol. 2 has a central theme - this time around it’s about a life that has been affected by Christ’s death and resurrection - as well as the subsequent death from sin and rebirth into a life of Christ.  This is glaringly seen in the album opener and first single “All Things New” as well as the fantastic “Hosanna” and strikingly strong “I’ve Got News”.  The equally engaging “Hosea” is a beautiful song about, obviously, the prophet Hosea - from Gomer’s perspective that showcases Peterson’s ability to tell a story using the craft of songwriting.  “All You’ll Ever Need” also uses biblical narratives - particularly Elijah and Elisha - to show us the beauty of Christ’s blood.  Musically, there’s nothing that pushes the boundaries for Peterson.  He’s pop/folk through and through.  However, his melodies remain consistently strong.  Overall, Resurrection Letters, Vol. 2 may not go down as Peterson’s finest work (see Behold the Lamb of God or The Far Country) - there’s still nothing here to complain about.  Peterson is a master wordsmith and compelling storyteller - all through the use of music.  This kind of artist doesn’t come around all the time.  Let’s cherish Peterson while we have him.

Purchase Resurrection Letters Volume II.
