Andrew Peterson & Randall Goodgame - Slugs & Bugs & Lullabies

image

Producer:  Andrew Peterson & Randall Goodgame
Record Label:  Square Peg Alliance
Website:  http://andrew-peterson.com and http://randallgoodgame.com

I haven’t ran across many people who haven’t fallen in love with Andrew Peterson in one way or another.  The popular singer/songwriter had an impressive fanbase while an independent artist, and his fanbase grew exponentially after he signed with Essential Records several years ago.  After not quite getting the marketing needed for a folk-styled singer/songwriter that he should have gotten, Essential dropped the budding artist.  Peterson then formed the Square Peg Alliance with many of his other independent artist-friends who also didn’t get the same kind of marketing power as others on their respective label homes.  Artists like Peterson, Jill Phillips, Derek Webb, Andy Gullahorn, Andrew Osenga, and more banded together to make the music they wanted to without having to succumb to major label and music politics.  Peterson’s first release with the newfound organization is a collaborative effort with fellow Square Peg-er Randall Goodgame - another popular indie artist who has written for several artists such as Caedmon’s Call.  However, it’s not the kind of collaboration most people would expect from two of the industry’s most prolific songwriters.  Rather - they teamed together to create Slugs & Bugs & Lullabies - an album dedicated to their children.  Slugs & Bugs & Lullabies features much of what makes Peterson and Goodgame so popular - clever melodies and creative hooks.  The album is full of playful numbers that are directed towards children - such as “Piggy Little Toes”, “Bears”, “Beans”, “God Made Me”, and the extremely funny “Tractor Tractor.” Also included are several lullabies like “Settle In, My Child, and Sleep”, “May the Lord Bless & Keep You”, and “My Baby Loves to Dance” - all of which effectively close out the album.  Musically - the album covers mostly music in the folk/acoustic landscape but also covers inspirational, country, bluegrass, and more.  Slugs & Bugs & Lullabies is a charming album that families will love in addition to just children.  It will be interesting to see what other kind of collaborations will be birthed from this new alliance.  The first is extremely endearing and musically captivating - just like it ought to be.
