dc talk - Greatest Hits

There doesn’t need to be much introduction to the group dc talk.  They started out as a hip hop group in the early 90’s and quickly adapted their style to the changing climate of pop music.  The group has covered every style imaginable through the years such as pop, rock, grunge rock, alternative, hip hop, rap, modern worship, pop-punk, and much more.  During their heyday, there was no group that could come close to their size of a fanbase or albums sold.  dc talk was Christian music.  The group disbanded several years ago and each members has had quite a successful career on their own - but none quite as popular as tobyMac.  Just before breaking up - the popular trio released Intermission - a greatest hits collection that featured songs that spanned the group’s career as well as two new songs.  So I guess I’m just a tad bit confused as to the purpose of this album.  The group hasn’t released any new material collectively since Intermission - and there isn’t any material found on Greatest Hits that isn’t already on Intermission.  As far as collections go, Greatest Hits features most of the group’s most popular cuts - such as “Jesus Freak”, “Between You & Me”, “In the Light”, “Colored People”, “My Will”, “Consume Me”, “Say the Words (Now)”, “What If I Stumble”, “The Hardway”, and more.  However, the album only contains songs from dc talk’s last three recordings (Supernatural, Jesus Freak, and Free At Least) - so several of the group’s earlier hits are strikingly missing like “Nu Thang”, “Heavenbound, and “Walls”.  Also - several key songs in the group’s career like “My Friend (So Long)”, “Wanna Be Loved”, “Into Jesus”, and “Lean On Me” were noticeably absent.  It just begs to question as to exactly why this album is being released.  It adds nothing to the career of one of Christian music’s most beloved artists - rather feels like yet another attempt at capitalizing on the dc talk name.  There’s nothing to recommend here.  If you are looking for a far better collection - go with Intermission - you’ll be much more pleased with the purchase.

Purchase Greatest Hits.
