Vota - Vota
Producer: Nathan Dantzler Anyone remember that band on Inpop Records from a couple of years ago called Casting Pearls? Yeah, don’t worry. No one expected you too. The band made their debut about the same time as a similarly named band (Casting Crowns anyone?), and their youth group band sound quality didn’t help people latch on to their sound. The band recently regrouped, changed their names, hopped to another label and are ready to make their debut, or comeback depending on how you look at it. Vota, as they are calling themselves now, seems to have heavily benefited from the regrouping. The band has jumped over to INO Records, one of the industry’s biggest labels, which no doubt helped in the budget department as well. The group’s self-titled album was produced by Nathan Dantzler (Relient K, Tree63, Audio Adrenaline) and really gets things started the right way with the extremely radio friendly and catchy “Hard to Believe.” The rest of Vota finds the band flirting back and forth between catchy, dance-pop (like Maroon5 or Newsboys) and atmospheric arena rock (Foo Fighters, etc.). They pull off both sounds pretty well - “Bye Bye” and “Loves Taken Over” both feature an infectious pop sound, while “Honestly” is a rock ballad without all the programming and overproduction. Lyrically, Vota sticks to topics that are relevant to the teen and college age crowd with snippets of faith thrown in for good measure - most notably found on cuts like “Hard to Believe” and album highlight “Free to Fail.” It’s hard to believe that this is the same band considering how much growth Vota has experienced in these few short years. If Casting Pearls had made the album that Vota has, there’s no doubt that there would have been no need for a facelift.
