Bluetree - God of This City
Producer: Paul Mills Due to the overwhelming response to Passion: God of This City and Chris Tomlin’s cover of “God of This City” - Bluetree, the popular worship song’s writers and originators, is now being introduced to the American audience. These Belfast rockers have quickly been scooped up by the fans of modern worship as their album has spent the last several weeks on the Top Christian Albums sales chart, and the song “God of This City” is heating up Christian music airwaves. God of This City is not unlike what you’re already hearing in the modern worship movement - not quite as pop as Chris Tomlin or Lincoln Brewster, but also not as experimental as artists like Future of Forestry or The Listening. The band probably sounds most like Delirious? with hints of David Crowder Band or Robbie Seay Band - most notably on tracks like “Life’s Noise,” the slow-building “For You,” and the aptly titled stand out track “Standing Out.” The band’s original version of “God of This City” may interest some as it includes and extra verse not found on Tomlin and Passion’s version. However, the extra verse doesn’t really add or take away from the song. Tomlin was probably right to not include the second verse. Lyrically, there’s not a lot of atypical writing shown - mostly it’s the same-ole same-ole in regards to worship writing - most notably seen on cuts like “Burn Me Up” and the aforementioned “For You.” Overall, fans of today’s modern worship movement will probably be drawn to this recording, but much of what is heard here is stuff that’s already been done before.
