John Waller - While I’m Waiting
Producer: Mark A. Miller This reviewer is quick to admit that John Waller was a slow build for me. Upon first listen - this former According to John front-man didn’t exactly have me hooping and hollering for joy - but after many listens, it became obvious to me that Waller was the kind of singer/songwriter that only comes along in a great while. His writing skills weren’t the most innovative or interesting - in fact they were quite simplistic. Yet, his songs seemed to connect with the listener in ways most simple songs don’t. He ended up having a couple hit songs from his debut record - “Still Calls Me Son,” “Calling For a Flood,” and “While I’m Waiting” (much do to the success of Fireproof the movie). Due to the success of “While I’m Waiting” - Waller is releasing his sophomore album - also titled While I’m Waiting. The aforementioned song is included on this disc, more than likely to help with the launch of this record. While I’m Waiting picks up where The Blessing left off. It’s a strong collection of radio-friendly pop/rock songs - similar in sound to Casting Crowns or Steven Curtis Chapman - with a relatability to his songs that most artists aren’t able to capture. The album kicks off with the worship oriented “Hands of the Healer” (and subsequently the only song Waller didn’t have a hand in writing). “Faith Is Living” is a catchy pop number, while “Quest” and “Our God Reigns” feature more rock oriented sounds not unlike Shaun Groves or Sanctus Real. “Cling to the Call” is an epic worship anthem that would fit nicely in a Casting Crowns set list. Lyrically, Waller sticks with biblical truths - sometimes using direct lines of scripture to convey his thoughts. This is most notably seen on cuts like “Faith Is Living,” “House of God,” and album highlight “Priestly Blessing.” Overall, While I’m Waiting is an excellent follow-up to Waller’s fantastic debut record. As long as Waller continues to write songs that connect with listeners coupled with interesting melodic hooks - he should have no problem finding a place in the music industry.
