Dan Macaulay - The Listening EP

With music of the church reaching an all time high, it seems there’s no end in sight for the next crop of worship leaders turned artists.  However, Dan Macaulay seems reluctant to wear the badge of “artist” anytime soon.  This Canadian-born budding worship leader remains planted in his home church as the worship leader at Connecticut’s Harvest Time Church while releasing his music to the masses.  Macaulay’s introduction to the massive church market is the three song (four if you count the radio edit of the first single) The Listening EP.  In normal instances, a three song EP would be the last thing I would want as an introduction to a new artist - but upon listening to the opening strains of “Win With Love” - I knew three songs was all I was going to need to get an accurate picture of exactly the kind of worship leader that Macaulay is.  “Win With Love” is a moving, epic like worship song that recalls the likes of Phil Wickham or Leeland - only without quit the vocal bravado that those two acts are known for (Macaulay recalls a less-confident Michael W. Smith in his vocal stylings).  Things really get interesting with the Brit-rock influenced (and almost seven minute long) “Listening.”  Though the song tackles nothing unique lyrically (“light of the world/won’t you light my pathway”) and even musically to a point - the way the song builds and the passion construed in Macaulay’s voice gives it an instant connection with the listener.  “Amazing” doesn’t quite pack the same punch as the first two songs - but when the listener is introduced with two such stellar songs, any song is going to be hard to follow those up.  The Listening EP also features a bonus cut of the radio-edit of “The Listening.”  Overall, The Listening EP is an excellent introduction to Macaulay.  Hopefully this isn’t the last we hear from this worship leader.
